This 1840s day gown is the newest addition to the historical repetoire by Blue Lady Couture. This Victorian costume is perfect for creating a mid-nineteenth century look, perfect for budding Jane Eyres and was inspired by the portrait of Charlotte Bronte.

The costume consists of a full skirt gathered onto a waistband which is attached to the fitted bodice. The bodice is interlined in cotton with a little boning and fastens with buttons down the front. The bodice has a high, round neckline, period correct off the shoulder seams, long sleeves and pretty mancheron detail.
The gown is made from reproduction mid-nineteenth century cotton print. This comes in a broad range of colours and designs so please select your preferred base colour and I shall be in touch with available options as it can vary in availability.  Shown are examples of previous clients' choices. The gown also features a pretty, cotton lace collar. (Lace may vary. The neck tie and shawl are not included).

Ideally the costume should be worn over period appropriate undergarments. At the very least I recommend a cotton petticoat to help the skirt to flare out. You can add one to your order in the drop down menu to help complete your look. The 1840s is before the steel crinoline and full, flounced petticoats were generally worn.

CONSTRUCTION
The gown is machine sewn, with overlocked seams in the bodice and hand finishing in places. The bodice is flatlined as is traditional to make minor adjustments easier. The buttonholes are machine stitched, but using a rounded buttonhole to give a slightly more period effect. I use modern buttons, but covered in matching fabric to the gown. The hem of the skirt is stiffened with faux horsehair braid and hemmed by hand.
The sewing machine wasn't invented until the 1850s, but completely hand sewing the gown would be cost prohibitive. I can however quote for hand sewing the buttonholes.


The gown is handmade to order. You will be asked to complete a measurement chart once your order has been received. My schedule generally runs about eight weeks from point of order. Please order in penty of time for events.
